Bossard Memorial Library Civil War Symposium returns to Bossard Library on April 6 The Civil War Symposium returns this year to the library and will be held beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 in the Riverside Room. Stop by throughout the day to hear presentations and discussions on topics related to the American Civil War. At 9:45 a.m., Peter Cultice will present “The Underground Railroad in Southeast Ohio.” Cultice is the president of the Muskingum County History organization and will provide an overview of both the sites and history of the Underground Railroad in the region. At 11 a.m., Christy Perry Tuohey, an author and freelance writer, will present “A Place of Rest for Our Gallant Boys: The U.S. General Hospital at Gallipolis.” This presentation will include a discussion of the hospital itself and the men and women who cared for the Union and Confederate soldiers at the facility. Beginning at 1:30 p.m., Roger Pickenpaugh will discuss “Captives in Gray: The Civil War Prisons of the Union.” A retired teacher who has authored several books of history, Pickenpaugh will discuss Confederate prison camps and prisoners, and whether prison conditions resulted from government policy or were the product of local officials and situations. The final presentation of the day will begin at 2:45 p.m. when Darl L. Stephenson, a retired USAFR Lieutenant Colonel who was a Middle East specialist for the Defense Intelligence Agency, discusses “Headquarters in the Brush: Blazer’s Independent Union Scouts.” Stephenson will discuss the Blazer Scouts, a group of sharpshooters and scouts consisting mainly of farmers from the mountains of southeastern Ohio and West Virginia, and their involvement in the Civil War. Everyone with an interest in the Civil War or local history is welcome and encouraged to attend all or some of the presentations. Light refreshments will be provided. Youth Services Programs Adult Programs French City Writers’ Guild Ages 18 and over Both budding and experienced writers are encouraged to attend the monthly meeting of the French City Writers’ Guild. Writers can bring their written works of various genres for discussion. French City Writers’ Guild meetings are only for individuals age 18 and over as mature themes may be discussed. Ages 13 and over Come out for Trivia Night and compete as an individual or play with your family or friends to test your knowledge of current events, science, history, pop culture, and more! Trivia Night is free and open to teens, adults, and families with children who are age 13 and over. Trivia Night Ages 13-18 The Teen Book Club will discuss Cat’s Café by Matt Tarpley during its April meeting. Teens will enjoy painting ceramic teacup pots and making their own comic. Boba tea and snacks will also be available. Cat’s Café can be borrowed instantly through the hoopla app with a Bossard Library card, while copies of the book can also be borrowed from the library. Teen Book Club Ages 7-9 The first In-B-Tween Club meeting in April is themed “Reading is Out of This World!” and will feature a reading of Eclipse by Andy Rash. Attendees will make galaxy jars and telescopes, and enjoy space-themed snacks. The second In-B-Tween Club meeting will feature the theme of “If You Need Me, Owl Be Reading,” and a reading of Yours in Books by Julie Falatko and Gabriel Alborozo. Attendees will enjoy making an owl pine cone craft, games, and snacks. The In-B-Tween Club meets twice per month and is for children, ages 7-9, and their parents/ caregivers. Ages 3-6 Stop by the library for evening storytime for children, ages 3-6, and their parents or caregivers. On April 11, children will enjoy a reading of Truck Full of Ducks by Ross Burach. On April 25, evening storytime will feature a reading of Abracadabra! It’s Spring by Anne Sibley O’Brien with illustrations by Susan Gal. ‘Game on!’ Game Day Saturday Ages 12 and over (under 12 with an adult) Bring your friends and stop by the library for Game Day. Bring your own games or choose a game from the library’s large board game collection. All ages and skill levels are welcome, but children who are age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees can stay for the entire event or just for a few hours. Light refreshments will be provided. ‘Color Me Happy’ Adult Coloring Ages 18 and over Stop by the library to enjoy an adults-only coloring session. Coloring sheets and coloring gel pens/pencils are provided or you can bring your own. Bring a friend and enjoy a relaxing coloring session and genial conversation. “Color Me Happy” is only for adults ages 18 and over. No children are permitted. Storytime features the reading of a book, songs, and crafts with engaging and educational themes for children. Yoga Ages 16 and over Join us for an hour-long Yoga session each Monday evening in the library’s Riverside Room. Please bring your own yoga mat or beach towel and wear comfortable clothing. Pat-a-Cake Lapsit Ages birth-3 Join us each Wednesday morning for lapsit as stories, rhymes, and songs with fun and engaging themes are presented for the youngest of readers and their parents/caregivers. Needlework Circle Ages 12 and over Anyone with an interest in fiber art is welcome and encouraged to stop by the library each Wednesday afternoon for Needlework Circle. Share your love of knitting, crocheting, sewing, or other fiber art with like-minded community members. Anyone with an interest in learning to knit, crochet, or complete other types of fiber art should also attend. Ages 18 and over The Adult Book Club will discuss Run, Rose, Run by Dolly Parton and James Patterson during its April meeting. Copies of the physical book can be borrowed from the library. The audiobook and eBook can be borrowed from either hoopla or the Ohio Digital Library. Adult Book Club meetings are typically held at 1 p.m. the last Saturday of each month. Lawson returns for poetry discussion and workshop Bossard Memorial Library will once again host Dr. Robert L. Lawson beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. Anyone with an interest in poetry or creative writing is welcomed and encouraged to attend this event. Lawson’s presentation will encourage creativity, originality, and experimentation in writers and speakers, while showing the importance of poetic delivery. Lawson, who previously spoke at Bossard Library in March 2019, is a retired educator who now works as an author and speaker in the field of self-development. He began his teaching career at Gallia Academy High School, and is a 1973 graduate of the University of Rio Grande, and 1978 graduate of Marshall University. He holds a doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lawson has authored 12 books, including Destined for Greatness: Getting the Results You Desire from Yourself and Others and Greatness Awaits: Putting Your Dreams into Action. During the presentation, Lawson will recite works from various poets, and also incorporate his own original poetry. After the presentation, Lawson will entertain audience questions. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase and have signed copies of Lawson’s books. Light refreshments will be provided. Library to host inaugural Pinewood Derby Day In honor of National Library Week, Bossard Library will host a Pinewood Derby Day on Saturday, April 13. Registered children and teens in kindergarten through grade 12, will have the opportunity to race pinewood derby cars. Public pinewood derby races will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue through noon. Scouts-only derby races will begin at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and observe the Pinewood Derby Day races. Light refreshments will be provided. Children who are registered for the public races will receive a pre-shaped car kit, paint, decals, and weights provided by the library. Derby car prep day will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 at the library. Pinewood derby races are a tradition in scouting that was first introduced in 1953 and has become a favorite activity among all branches of the scouts. Bossard Library is hosting this event during National Library Week to provide children of all ages, including those who do not participate in scouting, the opportunity to enjoy the fun and excitement of the pinewood derby. National Library Week will be held this year on April 713 and features the theme “Ready, Set, Library!” First sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958, National Library Week is observed by libraries across the country as a celebration of the pivotal role of libraries as community institutions of lifelong learning, opportunity, and exploration.
